About igni
igni is an AI math tutor built around a single, slightly awkward principle: the student has to do the math. We give hints, catch mistakes and help you understand what went wrong — then we hand the problem back to you.
What igni is
igni is a study tool for students working through math — algebra, calculus, statistics, geometry and everything around them. You scan a problem with your camera or type it in, and then you solve it, one step at a time, with igni beside you.
It checks each step as you write it. When a step is right, it says so and tells you what specifically was right. When a step is wrong, it points at where things started going wrong and helps you understand the mistake — and then it stops, because the next step is yours.
Why we built it this way
Every student now has access to tools that will solve a math problem in seconds. That is genuinely useful, and it is also a problem: if the AI does the reasoning, the student doesn't get the practice.
This isn't only our opinion. A field experiment with nearly 1,000 high-school students found that students using unrestricted GPT-4 did better on practice problems while they had access to it — and then performed 17% worse than their peers on an exam once it was taken away. A tutoring-oriented version with safeguards largely avoided that effect.
So igni is deliberately not the fastest way to get a math answer. There are plenty of tools for that. igni is built to make you someone who can solve the next problem without it.
About this blog
We write about how students actually learn math: what the research says, what gets in the way, and where AI helps or quietly hurts. We publish under The igni Team rather than individual bylines, so here is what that byline commits to:
- Claims about learning are linked to their source. When we say research found something, the sentence links to the peer-reviewed paper, and every article ends with a full reference list including DOIs. You should be able to check us.
- We describe findings, not headlines. If a study measured 183 students over four years, we say so. We don't turn a correlation into a promise.
- We don't publish answer keys. That would contradict the product and wouldn't help anyone learn.
- Posts carry a published and a last-updated date. When we revise an article, the date changes and the change is visible.
- We say when we're talking about our own product. Sections about igni are labelled as such and kept separate from the research.
Who is behind igni
igni is built and written by a small team working on mathematics education and AI tutoring. Articles are published under the organization rather than individual names, and everything on this blog is reviewed against the standards above before it goes out.
